On behalf of AMAC Action, the advocacy affiliate of the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC), with over 2 million members nationwide, including over 62,500 in North Carolina, I write in support of House Bill 958, the Election Law Changes Act. Trust in elections is fundamental to the health of our republic. Regardless of political affiliation, every voter deserves confidence that elections are conducted fairly, transparently, and in a manner that is easy to understand. HB 958 advances these goals by promoting accountability in election administration, strengthening oversight mechanisms, and ensuring election procedures remain clear and accessible to the public.
AMAC Action is particularly supportive of the bill's prohibition on Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). Elections work best when voters can easily understand how ballots are cast, counted, and reported. Ranked Choice Voting introduces multiple rounds of tabulation, making election outcomes more difficult for voters to follow and verify.
Election integrity is not solely about preventing fraud; it is also about maintaining public trust. When election systems become increasingly complex, confidence in the process can erode even when administrators perform their duties properly. North Carolina should continue to prioritize election systems that are transparent, predictable, and easily understood by voters across the state.
HB 958 also contains provisions designed to improve election oversight and accountability while providing greater clarity in election administration. These reforms help ensure that election officials have the tools necessary to conduct secure elections while preserving public confidence in the results.
At a time when confidence in public institutions remains fragile, AMAC Action thanks you for pursuing policies that strengthen voter trust and promote transparency. House Bill 958 moves the state in that direction by prioritizing election integrity, accountability, and clear election procedures that voters can easily understand.
